Shopify has introduced a new execution engine called GraphQL Cardinal. This engine replaces depth-first traversal with breadth-first execution, achieving up to 15X faster performance for large-scale GraphQL queries. It reduces GC overhead by 6X and improves P50 latency gains by over 4 seconds. The focus is on execution-layer efficiency and batched resolver processing for high-cardinality commerce queries.
